Saint Luke Academy RESEARCH AND DEDICATION TAKE STUDENTS TO NATIONAL HISTORY DAY COMPETITION June 11-14, 2007 On May 9, 2007, four student projects from Saint Luke Academy in Chicago were selected at the All-Illinois History Exposition in Springfield to be among the 14 entries Illinois sent to the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland in June. The Springfield Expo was the culmination of a year-long process researching a topic to create an entry in one of the four competitive categories: Research Paper (individual), and Historical Documentary, Exhibit, or Historical Performance (Individual or Group) The students excelled at school fairs, city and regional fairs and took their projects to compete against the best in the state. Illinois chooses two entries from each category to advance to the national competition. Among those moving on to compete on the national level were four Saint Luke entries: Keli Walsh took top honors for her historical performance; Kayla Bushey and Samantha Varga were chosen to represent the state in the Group Documentary division, Julian DiMaio advanced with his exhibit and Mandy Walsh was selected to represent the Individual Documentary division. At the National History Day Competition, students went head-to-head with the cream of the crop from the other 49 states and territories and Mandy Walsh's Individual Documentary advanced to the Final Round and ultimately took 7th place in the nation. Congratulations to our hard-working students. You're all winners! ___________________________________________________ |

Saint Luke Academy PEOPLE AREN'T HUNGRY ONLY IN NOVEMBER! May/June 2007 A weekend retreat focusing on the problem of World Hunger inspired a group of Saint Luke Academy 7th and 8th graders to take on an unusual hunger project. Noting that food drives in Chicago coincide with Thanksgiving and Christmas - when people seem more open to giving - they decided to organize a campaign to collect "1000 Cans" during the months of May and June when hunger is not so prominently in the press. They organized, publicized and marketed their campaign to the school and church, and each day took inventory of their progress. By the first week in June, they had reached their goal and contacted Gary Larsen of the Lakeview Pantry to come and receive their donation. The Pantry came with their van and had to make several trips to bring in the over 2000 lbs. of food the students had collected. ______________________________________________________ |

Saint Luke Academy LOCAL HISTORY AWARDS FOR SAINT LUKE STUDENTS May 17 Each year the Ravenswood Lakeview Historical Assocation sponsors a contest for student historians. Students were invited to research and create projects, either an essay or an exhibit, which use primary Chicago local history sources - family or archival photographs, interviews, oral histories, business records and local histories to develop their Lakeview/Ravenswood-centered entry. Students from Saint Luke Academy were among those honored for their research: Brian Sullivan, Andrew Figueroa, Nicholas Ratdke, Brian Sullivan, Steven Beck, Geno Velasco and Christian LaLuz. When receiving their medals and certificates from Richard Bjorkland, students shared with the audience the theme of their project and some of the local research that made it special. |
