"Of Voices Most True" 1957 |
September 9–30, 2007 Gertrude Doederlein “Golden Gert: 1957-Seminal Year ” In 1957, Saint Luke Kindergarten teacher Gertrude Doederlein, having achieved her 30-year teaching milestone and authored books on instructional methodology, enrolled in painting and drawing classes and began to produce the abstract canvases that would become her signature style in another 30-year award-winning career. Oil paintings produced in this seminal year, and displayed in this, her 50th anniversary year, show the developing artist experimenting with color, shapes and spatial relationships in heroic sizes that demonstrate the artist's confidence and talent. |

Egyptians Drowned in the Red Sea-Gustave Dore |
October 7 – November 4, 2007 “Imaging the Word ” Advances in printing technology allowed the work of 19th century artists to illustrate "family bibles" marketed to middle class families. Complex engravings that traced salvation history -- the product of historical research, travel and the artists' imaginations -- offered captivating images of distant places and times. These pictures became the standard for biblical imagery for several generations, influencing visualizations from Sunday School leaflets to biblical movies. The exhibit will include images from the Dore illustration series alongside illustrations from Saint Luke's collection of antique family and service bibles. |
