Gertrude Doederlein
"Futuriffic"
Tempera on Paper
|
After the hardships of the second world war, America turned its eye to the future to imagine the life and culture that rapidly advncing scientific discoveries could provide.
In the 1950s, Gertrude Doederlein produced series of "future-scapes", practicing composition and perspective in an imagined future habitat. These student exercises offer a glimpse into the vision the mid-20th century public held for our time.
The paintings in this exhibit were found in the portfolios Doederlein left to the gallery named in her honor. They had never before been displayed, being dismissed as artifacts of the learning process. Sixty years later, we put them on exhibit both for their historical significance as representative visions of a past generation and, since the lines and organization of these works foreshadow her more mature paintings, for their place in her development as an artist.

Friends and Members of Saint Luke
Annual Founders Day Anniversary Exhibit
The Doederlein Gallery is a ministry of Saint Luke Church. Its goal is to use the field of art to promote sharing, interaction and cooperation between Saint Luke and individuals and community groups within our urban area. A series of fine arts and ethnic/multicultural exhibits is offered throughout the course of the year. The gallery also serves as a showcase for artists who produce religious works but does not limit itself to this theme.
