MOLAS Benefit Sale for the Saint Luke Academy Scholarship Fund |
|
In keeping with its commitment to support and display traditional ethnic arts, Saint Luke has on permanent display throughout the building textile works by Kuna women of the San Blas Islands in Panama. These unusual reverse applique works were originally sections of native costume, elaborately pieced and embroidered. They depict native tales, flora and fauna, and Christian stories. . Several exhibits of these striking pieces have generated sales that benefit the islands' educational fund and workshops have introduced both adults and children to the techniques that create these unique textiles. Individuals interested in supporting ethnic artists may purchase molas on this website to benefit two very important groups of people. First, the initial purchase of these fairly traded textiles by Dennis Grabowski, a long-time supporter of Kuna missions, benefits those indiginous artists who continue their traditional craft. |
