RESOUND, YOU SONGS |
Sunday, May 11, 2008
10:30 a.m.
. Bach's Cantata BWV 172 Erschallet, ihr Lieder "Resound, you songs" . The Saint Luke Bach Choir and Chamber Orchestra Mark Bangert, director The very nature of Pentecost is to throw caution to the winds. Old rules give way to a Spirit that “blows where it wills.” In 1714 Bach, who was 29 and just getting used to his title as |
Concertmaster, poured much energy into this cantata, testing his own limits, exploring new sonorities, and providing posterity with a musical push towards Spirited living. For sure he threw work to the winds, wind instruments that is, trumpets and drums made busy in both chorus and aria. He liked this piece. There are four documented additional performances of it, each sporting some small changes. Here at St. Luke we like it too, this being the third documented performance and the only repeat of the season.
