Why Do We Worship on Sunday? Sunday, the day of Christ’s resurrection and of the appearances to the disciples by the crucified and risen Christ, is the primary day on which Christians gather to worship. Within this assembly, the Word is read and preached and the sacraments are celebrated. How Often Should a Congregation Celebrate Holy Communion? A congregation with an ordained pastor should celebrate Holy Communion every Sunday. Celebrations are also appropriate on other occasions: Saturday evening preparation for Sunday, festivals and lesser festivals, midweek services, the Christian marriage and the burial of the dead, and other occasions on which the congregation assembles. At What Age Do ELCA Congregations Allow Members Their First Communion? First communion can and does happen at many different ages throughout congregations of the ELCA. The Use of the Means of Grace: A Statement on the Practice of Word and Sacrament says, "There is no command from our Lord regarding the age at which people should be…first communed." As a result, the age at which baptized members of our congregations receive their first communion reflects a variety of practices and understandings. At Saint Luke Church, children may commune at any age, but generally when they are able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the sacrament and willingness to participate regularly in this new dimension in their life of faith. Parents and children meet with the pastor for educational sessions after which the child is invited to assume his role as a communicant member. |
